REVERSE ENGINEERING
Reverse engineering is necessary when an existing product that has insufficient design documentation for modern manufacturing processes is either damaged, subjected to a redesign to improve the product or take advantage of advances in manufacturing methods and materials.
The physical part is scanned and the digitized surfaces used to produce a 3D CAD model. Scanning allows fast data capture and the ability to capture free form surfaces that may be difficult to capture and reproduce in CAD using other methods.
The model can then be used by the designers to develop the product further, still keeping the design intent of the original product.
